welcome to the happiness project.

Life coaching for children and teens, helping them navigate early life in a world saturated with social media, endless connectivity, and distance from the natural world.

hi! my name is Kate.

I’m a middle school guidance counselor with a Masters in counseling, and I see an incredible need for counseling and life coaching in children and teens. When trying to refer students to a therapist, I found it very difficult to get an appointment. I feel compelled to fill in these gaps of support for kids and teens.

I believe that helping children and teens is my calling in life. As a teenager with chronic anxiety, I know how it feels to struggle with a sense of lack of control during the turbulence of adolescence. And now, as a mother of three, I know how helpless a parent can feel, and how heartbreaking it can be to see your child struggle with the weight of finding their way in what sometimes feels like a hopeless world.

There is, however, a light at the end of this tunnel.

Life Coach / Counselor

The purpose of my coaching is to help your teen gain control over their emotional life and their reactions to setbacks. I’m here to teach them the awareness, motivation and tools they need to begin to understand their emotions, change their thought processes, and be well on their way to transition from a fixed to a growth mindset – the foundation of true resilience in life.

my qualifications & education.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Psychology/Sociology, a MA in Counseling / Life Coaching. Working on Doctorate in Psychology. My coaching is based on the many principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Positive Psychology. I am not a licensed therapist and therefore do not deal with diagnosis or medicine. I believe there are many children and teens that would really benefit from life coaching.

my work experience.

I have worked in a DYS facility for boys as a corrections counselor, humanitarian work in Romania, taught English as a second language, counseled in nursing homes, started a few businesses, and am now a middle school guidance counselor.

my

MISSION

The mission of the happiness project is to help children and teens navigate early life in a world saturated with social media, endless connectivity, and distance from the natural world. While in graduate school I felt compelled to understand what makes people truly happy. I believe we are looking for happiness in the wrong places, and in doing so are creating nihilism in our youth. The answer to the question “what will make me happy” is not filled with tangible things, or digital hearts, or views, or likes, or number of followers. The answer is found in a life filled with meaning, purpose, and service. We are meant to love, to be loved, and to be fulfilled by serving others, and in doing so, ourselves.

coaching can pave the way.

Teens are often resistant to therapy and the idea of a coach feels less intimidating. Building a trusting relationship with a client can open the door for all kinds of help. I will always refer to a therapist when a teen is in crisis.

teenagers enjoy coaching…

because it feels more like mentoring than therapy. Coaching helps teens get to know who they are and what matters most to them. Teenagers choose what areas of their life they would like to see improve and because they have a voice in coaching they become highly motivated.

coaching versus therapy.

A life coach sets up clients with short and long term solutions for positive growth. Clients work with life coaches to clarify goals and identify obstacles and create an action plan. Therapy focuses on past traumas and issues to change self-destructive habits, repair and improve relationships, and work through painful feelings. therapy focuses on the past, introspection and analysis, while coaching focuses on the future and setting goals.

service as a part of healing.

I believe that stepping outside of ourselves and helping others is a big part of healing our own issues. Helping others keeps our problems in perspective and gives our life a higher purpose. Part of my coaching involves optional service hours to help those in our community.
